Go to dark Gethsemane,
 ye that feel the tempter’s power;
Your Redeemer’s conflict see,
watch with him one bitter hour;
Turn not from his griefs away,
 learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall,
view the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall!
O the pangs his soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
 learn of him to bear the cross.

Calvary’s mournful mountain climb;
there, adoring at his feel,
Mark the miracle of time,
God’s own sacrifice complete;
“It is finished!” hear him cry;
learn of Jesus Christ to die.

The Agape Supper symbolizes the Last Supper for Jesus Christ and his disciples.  Following the Supper and foot washing, the people stand and process into the church for the Maundy Thursday service at 7:00 pm.  

 

Following the Agape Supper, the people process and gather in the Nave for a solemn service.  This service includes the Solemn Procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose, when the Celebrant places the consecrated bread into a stand, called a monstrance, which emphasizes the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and then processes the Blessed Sacrament with a special vestment, called the humeral veil, which essentially hides the one carrying it and elevates the Sacrament. The altar party then processes to the Lady Chapel and places it on the altar of repose for the Prayer Vigil throughout the night.

The Procession of the Blessed Sacrament is followed by the Stripping of the Altar and the reading of Psalm 22.

Good Friday is the day where Jesus was crucified on the cross on the orders of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Jesus suffered on the cross for 6 hours. This day represents to Christians the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus' life. Select from two Good Friday services - Noon or 7:00 pm.  The preacher for the noon service will be The Rev. Nathan Carr; the preacher at the 7:00 service will be The Rev. William Font.

The Great Vigil of Easter is the culmination of the sacred celebration of Holy Week and the beginning of the celebration of the Lord's Resurrection. It is the climax of the Christian year and unfolds, in scripture, psalm, sacrament and liturgy, the story of redemption. It begins in darkness and proceeds to a joyous burst of light. It begins in silence and proceeds to the glorious proclamation of the Paschal Alleluia. The Paschal Candle represents our Risen Lord shining in the light and splendor of His resurrection. He is the new 'pillar of fire' leading redeemed Israel out of the bondage of sin into the promised land of heaven.

This year we have several baptisms scheduled for this evening.  

Begin this glorious day of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ with an Easter Sunrise Service in the outdoor Peace Chapel.  Enjoy the sounds of nature all around as we absorb scripture, prayers and celebrate the Eucharist in His honor.

Coming from Sunrise Service or early for the Easter Day Sunrise Eucharist - Bagels, cream cheese and breakfast pastries from Panera Bread will be served along with delicious offerings of additional breakfast dishes lovingly prepared and served by our parishioners.  Come, relax, enjoy one another and some good food before our Easter Day Festive Eucharist.  

A joyous service enhanced by beautiful music and altar flowers, please join as we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  Following the service, all are invited to join the children for an Easter Egg hunt.  So much fun to watch the kids searching and finding the colorful eggs.

 

A special evening Eucharist on the Monday following the Resurrection.  

Matthew 28:9-15
Jesus met Mary Magdalene and the other Mary and said, "Greetings!" And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, "You must say, `His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.' If this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story is still told among the Jews to this day.

Mary Magdalene stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, `I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

The Brotherhood of St Andrew meets on the second Saturday of each month at 8:00 am in the Parlor.  Our mission is to support our Vicar's ministry. At each meeting, the men read and discuss the Gospel reading for the next day, Sunday.  ALL men and youth of St. John’s are cordially invited to visit and become acquainted with The Brotherhood of St. Andrew of St. John’s.  We are actively seeking men of ALL ages and abilities to help revive this special men’s ministry.
